Monic'a’s Story

In 2013 every month I would suffer from excruciating pain and heavy cycles.I knew something was wrong. At my annual women’s wellness visit I told my OBGYN about my symptoms. She said that it sounded like I had a uterine fibroid and ordered a sonogram to confirm. The test result showed a submucosal uterine fibroid. She asked what I wanted to do. I chose to have a myomectomy to remove the fibroid. Currently I am waiting on test results to see if I need to have another procedure. The sad part is everyone does not have the same experience or a doctor like me. Some women suffer in silence. By age 50, 70% of White women and 80% of Black women are diagnosed with fibroids. Every 10 minutes 12 hysterectomies are performed in the U.S. & 6.5 million women in the United States seek treatment for fibroids. I wear white today because I have power over my body. I have a choice in the treatment I receive. I have a voice and so do you!
